MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Center for Advanced Educational Services (CAES),
Distance Learning Programs,Cambridge, MA
The College: The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is one of the
world's outstanding universities. MIT is independent, coeducational and
privately endowed. It is organized into five schools that contain
twenty-one academic departments, as well as many interdepartmental
programs, laboratories and centers.
Distance Learning Programs: The Center for Advanced Educational Services
offers various undergraduate and graduate educational programs via
multi-modal distance learning.
Delivery Media: Off-campus learners use a combination of communication
technologies for course delivery including videoconferencing, satellite,
internet, videotapes, e-mail, and fax. The design of MIT's distance
learning programs recognizes the benefits of student-professor as well as
student-student interaction.
Program(s) of Study: Programs that exist through the Center for Advanced
Educational Services range from entirely asynchronous, independent learning
to entirely synchronous, group based learning. At the present time there
is no degree granting program offered through CAES, however, some of the
courses can be taken for MIT credit that may later be applied towards a
degree granting program.
The Advanced Study Program (ASP) provides lifelong learning opportunities
for working professionals to be a part of the MIT experience through a
unique partnership with academia. ASP courses delivered via distance
learning
technologies allow groups of learners to participate at their
location instead of coming to the MIT campus.
The Hypermedia Teaching Facility (HTF) develops web-based courses for the
MIT community and for distance learning applications. These web-based
courses are custom-designed in collaboration with MIT faculty and staff to
meet the pedagogical and technological requirements of the particular set
of course content and intended learners.
In additon to programs offered through The Center for Advanced Educational
Services, CAES distributes a number of eight-week certificate programs
through PBS The Business Channel. For more information on these programs,
please check our web site at:
http://www-caes.mit.edu/Programs/distance.html
Credit Options: Both credit and non-credit courses are offered through
CAES. Distance learners participating in the ASP are eligible to receive
MIT credit for course work that is successfully completed.
Admission: Applicants seeking for-credit courses through the ASP should
check the admissions requirements on our web site at:
http://caes.mit.edu/Programs/asp.html
Applicants seeking non-credit courses will be accepted based upon their
academic training and professional experience. In order to maintain the
highest standards, CAES reserves the right to select those applicants whose
qualifications and experiences suggest that they will receive the most
benefit from a given program.
Tuition and Fees: Tuition is based on the type of academic credit
provided. For-credit courses, delivered live through the ASP, carry full MIT tuition
for qualified candidates.
Financial Aid: There is no financial aid offered for any of the distance
learning programs offered through the CAES.
Applying: Individuals interested in applying to any of the CAES distance
learning programs need to submit an application, along with the required
supporting documents.

Offering both undergraduate and graduate programs. Started in 1963, the Adult Degree Program is one of the first
brief-residency undergraduate programs for adults in North America.
Our faculty have decades of experience working in a mentoring
relationship with adult learners. The Adult Degree Program has helped
thousands of students earn their B.A., realize their goals, improve their
careers, and go on to pursue advanced studies (M.A., M.S., M.S.W.,
M.F.A., M.B.A., J.D. and Ph.D degrees).
Students attend either a weekend residency in Montpelier or
Brattleboro once a month; or a 9-day residency every six months on
our Montpelier campus. Academic residency activities include:
selecting a faculty mentor; planning the study project; faculty and
student presentations; seminars; readings and exhibitions; and guest
presentations.

Old Dominion University
We understand the needs of the placebound student;
those who live far from our campus, already employed,
already settled, but who realize the advantages of a
degree in their chosen field. We understand the needs of
those whose careers are well underway, but whose
employers require expertise in the latest technological
advances or whose chance for promotion depends on an
advanced degree. We understand the needs of the
thousands of people affected by down-sizing, who need a
retraining, relearning experience. We understand the
parent, whose schedule is already filled with their child's
educational pursuits and activities, and who cannot seem
to find time to complete a degree program. Through Old
Dominion's higher education centers, Weekend College
program, Military programs, and the TELETECHNET
distance learning network, attaining a degree has become
a reality for everyone.
