natural extension of the original University mission to provide the opportunity for young men and women to obtain

The Fielding Institute,
Santa Barbara CA (Ph.D, Ed.D) The clinical psychology
Ph.D. program has a residency requirment. The American
Psychological Association, our accrediting body for this
program, has criteria with respect to residency. The
curriculum has to be the equivalent of three academic
years of full time RESIDENT graduate study and require
the equivalent of one academic year of full time
attendance at the institution granting the degree. We
address the second part by requiring and documenting a
minimum of 300 hours of attendance at events where there
is faculty/student contact. Our Orientation and Planning
Session (OPS) is REQUIRED for all newly admitted students
and counts towards residency. Students can accumulate
additional hours through attendance at local
faculty/student meetings, national sessions, research
sessions, etc. Students are not REQUIRED to attend any
specific ones of these, but they must accumulate the
required residency hours. In fact, most students
accumulate an average of about 150 hours annually. It
seems to be the average amount of contact necessary to do
the business of being a doctoral student. The Institute
also offers a Ph.D. in Human and Organization
Development, an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and
Change, a Masters program in Organizational Design and
Effectiveness, and certificate programs in Clinical
Neuropsychology and in Group Psychotherapy. These
programs are not as strict about the residency
requirement as the clinical psychology one.
