Capella University
is accreditated with the Commission on Institutions of
Higher Education of the North Central Association of
Colleges and Schools. Doctorate degrees in Education,
Human Services, and Organization and Management Studies.
Residency is acomplished through an orientation seminar, three 2 1/2 day focus
seminars and one 2 week extended seminar.
Colorado State University The Ph.D. is the highest academic degree offered by the University.
Those who earn it must demonstrate significant intellectual achievement,
high scholarly ability, and great breadth of knowledge. The nature of the
degree program will vary greatly depending on the discipline involved.
In addition, doctoral work requires heavy participation in research or
other kinds of creative activity. Particular projects may assume any of
an almost infinite number of forms.
There is no University residency requirement for Ph.D. degree
programs; however, such requirements may exist at the department
level. Students should check with their departments about all policies.
For students who submit a master's degree in partial fulfillment of these
requirements: A minimum of 32 credits must be earned at Colorado
State University after admission to a doctoral program. For students
who do not submit a master's degree in partial fulfillment of these
requirements: A minimum of 62 credits must be earned at Colorado
State University after admission to a doctoral program. A minimum of
72 semester credits beyond the baccalaureate is required.
Regent
University - Virginia Beach VA The Center for Leadership Studies currently offers two degrees: the PhD in Organizational
Leadership and the MA in Organizational Leadership. Both programs are offered exclusively
on-line, which means that you will use e-mail and the internet as your primary method of completing
the program's requirements.
George Washington University's Graduate School of Education and Human
Development has taken their Doctorate of Education in Executive Leadership, one of
the oldest such academic leadership programs in the United States, into cyberspace.
Entering human resource professionals study in teams or cohorts. One weekend each
month, learners converge on the "real" campus in Northestern Virginia for "in person"
instruction and mentoring. Between campus visits, cohorts use e-mail and electronic
conferencing to strategies on group projects and problems.
Nova Southestern
University
(Ph.D. & Ed.D) (Ft. Lauderdale, FL): The original distance Ed.D. program by a trailblazer in nontraditional education,
and still probably the best of the bunch. Requires summer or
short-term residencies on campus, as well as monthly meetings of
student "clusters" held in several cities around the U.S.
Majors
include higher education administration and adult & continuing
education, as well as secondary education. Nova has probably
graduated
more school superintendents and principals than any other program.
North Carolina State College Ed. Doctorate
A Great in-State distance learning program.
This curriculum is divided into four inter-related areas. The first is a set of core or foundation courses
considered generic to preparation of educational leaders who wish to work with adults in both
formal and non-formal settings. The second focus emphasizes the formal educational setting for
those students whose interests are in providing leadership for community colleges, and other
post-secondary institutions, and for those whose interests are in adult and continuing education
outside a formal education institution structure. The third area focuses upon systematic inquiry,
which revolves, in large measure, around dissertation research activities. Students will complete three
research methods courses: (1) one focusing on quantitative methodologies;
(2) another focusing on
qualitative methodologies; and (3) a third focused on methodologies
specific to the particular
research in which the student expects to engage. The fourth area of focus in on acquiring conceptual
ideas and processes from disciplines outside the field of adult and community college education.
Students will complete three courses in this area, two counseling courses and a yet-to-be determined
elective.
The Union Institute Cincinnati,
OH (Ph.D.) There are 35 required residency days: a 10-day colloquium, three 5-day seminars, and ten
peer days. However, any of these may be taken at numerous locations in the country (and, for that
matter, in other countries), so it's not as if you actually have to schlep to Cincinnati to fulfill these
requirements.
California Institute for Integral Studies
San Francisco, CA (Ph.D) On-line Cohort Option: The cohort meets twice a year for seminars, and then in seminars
conducted on-line via computer conferencing. The curriculum for distance
learners is the same as that of the weekend cohort group.
The Fielding Institute, Santa Barbara
CA (Ph.D, Ed.D) The clinical psychology Ph.D. program has a
residency requirement. The American Psychological Association, our
accrediting body for this program, has criteria with respect to residency.
The curriculum has to be the equivalent of three academic years of full time
RESIDENT graduate study and require the equivalent of one academic year of
full time attendance at the institution granting the degree. We address the
second part by requiring and documenting a minimum of 300 hours of
attendance at events where there is faculty/student contact. Our Orientation
and Planning Session (OPS) is REQUIRED for all newly admitted students and
counts towards residency. Students can accumulate additional hours through
attendance at local faculty/student meetings, national sessions, research
sessions, etc. Students are not REQUIRED to attend any specific ones of
these, but they must accumulate the required residency hours. In fact, most
students accumulate an average of about 150 hours annually. It seems to be
the average amount of contact necessary to do the business of being a
doctoral student.
The Institute also offers a Ph.D. in Human and Organization Development, an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership
and Change, a Masters program in Organizational Design and Effectiveness,
and certificate programs in Clinical Neuropsychology and in Group Psychotherapy.
These programs are not as strict about the residency requirement as the
clinical psychology one.
Columbia University, New York, NY
(Ed.D.) Doctor of Education in Educational Administration (Ed.D./TA)
The degree is designed with both intellectual and experiential components. It serves professionals in
education who intend to be actively involved in educational leadership at the building, district, or city
planning level. It also serves students aspiring to research, the professorate, and employment in a
wide variety of educational institutions and settings. Applicants who are admitted to this program will
become certified doctoral candidates on successful completion of 60-70 points of course work, a
certification examination, and four clinical projects. Thereafter, candidates will complete their
remaining course work, a dissertation proposal hearing and the dissertation oral defense. The
doctoral degree in educational administration builds competence in the areas of policy analysis,
organizational analysis, management systems, and institutional analysis. A concentration (15 points) in
one of the four areas is required. Most classes are scheduled between 5:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M. during
the Spring and Fall semesters. Additionally, there are two Summer sessions with classes scheduled
throughout the day. Degrees are individually planned by the student and his/her advisor, according to
the students experience, focus, and needs. On average, full time students can complete the degree
requirements and graduate in three to five years.

University of South Africa
(Ph.D. in Distance Education)
The Saybrook institute's
mode of education is distinctive. Because our programs are structured
to meet the personal and professional needs of adult learners and
persons not able or willing to travel to fixed classrooms, Saybrook
uses a distance learning format. This method, adapted from the
European tutorial model, emphasizes one-to-one interaction between
students and faculty. Using learning guides, students complete
coursework in guided independent study, encouraged and evaluated by
faculty who communicate in person, by phone, letter, fax, or computer.
At Saybrook, our faculty serve as advisors rather than teachers in
the traditional sense. While much of the student's intellectual
work is done independently, the relationship between faculty and
student allows for commentary and analysis that typically exceed what
occurs in traditional classroom situations. The format works
especially well for mature students who wish to tailor the pace, the
scope, and the process of education to their individual requirement
